Therapeutic ultrasound in Chatsworth: how Dr. Ed uses it in treatment
Sound waves warm and loosen tissue before hands-on work. This is treatment ultrasound, not the imaging kind.
What therapeutic ultrasound does
At his Chatsworth clinic, Dr. Ed applies ultrasound to the area he is treating. He uses it for:
- Deep heating of tissue
- Settling muscle spasm
- Helping tendons and ligaments recover
Diagnostic ultrasound takes pictures. This kind treats.
How it fits a visit
Ultrasound takes a few minutes on the treated area. Manual therapy and exercise follow.
Ultrasound is part of treatment for tendinitis, muscle strains, post-op stiffness and plantar fasciitis. Dr. Ed decides at your evaluation whether you need it, and not every tool is used at every visit: he goes by your results, your medical history and your condition.
What it is not for
Dr. Ed does not use ultrasound if you have a history of cancer or if you are pregnant. Tell him about either before your first visit.
What a patient says
Ultrasound comes up in Maggie and Mark's review on the post-op page.
Insurance and referrals
- No referral needed to start
- California law lets you see a physical therapist without a referral for up to 12 visits or 45 days, whichever comes first. After that, we need a referral from your doctor to continue. Medicare patients need a referral from the start.
- Insurance
- We accept Medicare and personal injury liens. If you have PPO insurance, we provide a superbill, an itemized receipt you send to your insurer for reimbursement. Direct-pay patients are welcome.
- Visits
- Visits run about 60 minutes, depending on what you need, and every one is one-on-one with Dr. Ed.
Details and what to bring are on the insurance and cost page.
Questions about ultrasound
Is it the same as the ultrasound at the doctor's office?
No. This one treats by warming tissue, and it does not take pictures.
Does it hurt?
No. You feel gentle warmth or nothing at all.
Is it covered?
It is part of a physical therapy visit and included in its price, not billed separately. See the insurance notes above for how the visit is paid for.
